Hi my name is Marissa and this is my `Iolani Women in Literature website. I took this class because I wanted to learn about the different roles of women in society and their impact on the way people view them. Our class has learned how to deconstruct commercials, photos, and pieces of literature. I found media to be interesting to deconstruct because basically everything in society is done based on gender, race, and sex. Women have gained a lot of rights and independence over the years but a lot of companies feel that “sex sells.” Although I think this is probably true, it is setting standard on different types of people. Below is an recording of my voice.

This was my first time having any experience with using a blog. I thought blogs were pointless before this experience because I thought blogs were only for displaying your feelings on a website, but after having the opportunity to blog, there are many more reasons to have a blog. My favorite blog I have done so far is the one where I had to define a boy, girl, man, and woman. This blog forced me to think about the difference between each of them and what is the defining line where a boy becomes a man and girl becomes a woman. Below is a link to my blog. http://chow123.tumblr.com/
This Coming of Age paper made me explore if I thought I was still a girl or a woman. I found that although many people may not think of me as a woman but I feel that I am much closer to becoming a one after my mom passed away from breast cancer two years ago. From this experience, I have become more independent and dependant on myself. I take responsible for my actions and I lave learned that I don’t always have to be right. This was a extremely sad experience, but I think that there is something positive that came out of this experience. Coming of Age Essay Marissa
This media paper made me deconstruct the show South Park on Comedy Central. Through this paper, I have come to the conclusion that although South Park pushes satire to the extreme, the show takes real life issues and mocks them to raise awareness about those issues. This paper was very was a waking experience for me because I did not realize how much gender roles play in television shows. When I look at advertisements, and television shows now, I realize how much companies believe that “sex sells.” This may be the wrong strategy to take but it works and media is a huge contributor to stereotypes and the way people view society. This poem was written about my mom because I wanted to know more about her childhood. What I have learned from stories, it seemed like she was the least favorite out of the three daughters. I started the poem with her childhood and then told her story up until the day she passed away. I talk about how she did not get any money from her parents when she went to college and how she always had to work while her sisters got to hang out with their friends. When my mom finally got the attention from her family it was to late. Question Poem Marissa
This panel is an extension of the end of the novel Persepolis. The 2005 French Riots was a very violent time in France. This experience brought back memories of Marji’s past experience with war in her childhood times. Now that she is all grown up, she understands the complexity of war and she can relate to the people for taking a stand for what they believe in. Marji is faced with a decision whether she wants to conform or not. Having a chance to make an alternative ending to this novel was a great experience because it really made me think of how fortunate I am to have the right to believe what we want. It also gave me a feeling of independence to think for myself. Final Panel Marissa
Through this class I have learned the roles of men and women in society and the numerous factors that contribute to stereotypes that we still believe today. Media has contributed to these different stereotypes and how media set the standards for what society believes to be “masculine” and “feminine.” Although these views are becoming flexible, society sees what it wants to see and there will always be pressure of “fitting in to the norm.” Another thing I will take away from this experience is the strategy of different clothing, television, movie, and fashion companies. These companies use the strategies that may objectify women and men, but the bottom line is that these companies are businesses and they have to do what sells. Media has carved the “perfect” image, which ultimately is unattainable. Due to the technological advancements, many picture do not depict the image of the actual person, but of something that was retouched to look skinnier, blemish free, a bigger bust, and etc. Movies also have a big impact on the younger generation because a lot of the movie depict the “happily ever after” theme throughout the different movies and this theme is carried with us for the rest of our lives. This can also lead to problems with people because they believe that their lives should be a “happily ever after,” but unfortunately, this does not always work. I will take all of these experiences and plan to use it in my career. I plan to go into business and I will be sure that I do not support women objectification and stereotypes of all genders. My final project was also a great learning experience for me because where I was in my early teen years, I remember seeing a lot of cases of bullying and suicides and that is where I got my idea. I narrowed this topic by only focusing on cyber bullying because I have realized that our society depends so much on technology and I wanted to explore the pros and cons of the Internet. I have learned that transparency of the Internet makes cyber bullying not gender based, which is scarier for the victims because now, anyone can be susceptible to cyber bullying. This project made me more aware of the Internet’s possibilities and I am more aware of what I post on the Internet.
