In this editorial, I focused on only one of my reasons for the way women dress. This started up my entire project, but my actual answer to the question ended up being much different. However, I just wanted to convince people that women only dressed for men. To write most of this editorial, I created a survey and surveyed 100 young women and 100 young men in order to use data as a source to convince people. I loved writing this editorial because I love trying to convince people of a view point they might not have agreed with before. This was just the beginning of my project and you should read my research paper to see what I really concluded about my topic. Editorial
Yes, Sir It is fair to say that young women buy their clothing because they like it. However, the real question is - Why do young women like the clothing that they do? Sure, they like the overall appearance of the article, but what are the deeper meanings behind their thoughts on their clothing?
Young women like to feel confident and confidence is a very important quality. A majority of the 100 young women surveyed said, "When you know you look good, you feel good. It's easier to present yourself in a more positive way." Clothing should not be what is holding a person back, and many women have realized this. 34% of the 100 young males surveyed claimed that breasts are female's most appealing physical attribute. In comparison, 53% of girls stated that their ideal top on a normal day would be a tank top and 33% of girls said their ideal top would be a v-neck. Both the tank top and v-neck are very revealing in the chest area and these corresponding results prove that young women like the clothing they buy because it accentuates what men like to see.
33% of males stated that a woman's butt is a female's most appealing physical attribute and 41% said that her legs are the most appealing physical attribute. In comparison, 90% of girls stated that their ideal bottom would be a pair of shorts. Shorts accentuate both a female's legs and her behind. 25% of women said that the feature they try to accentuate most is their legs and 27% said their behind. In order for women to feel confident, they respond to what their male counterparts want to see.
Summer Shiigi, manager and head stylist at boutique Bamboo sky, said that some of the trends right now are vertical stripes, rompers, and lace. However, how exactly did these become the latest trends? Vertical stripes are very flattering on the female figure because they make her look skinnier than she is. Women like to look skinny because society and the expectations of men force them to want to be skinny. Rompers are typically short-shorts, which accentuates a female’s legs and bottom, taken in at the waist, which accentuates the appearance of an hourglass figure, ruffles over the bosom, which give the appearance of a fuller chest, and spaghetti strapped, which gives the romper a lower cut to show off her cleavage. Wearing a romper instantly makes a woman’s body look better in the eyes of men and society. Finally, yet importantly, lace has a certain sex appeal that is not too obvious. It gives men a glimpse of what is beneath her clothing, yet it is still mysterious.
Many trends that women follow correspond directly to what men want to see. It is clear that women buy the clothing they do because they like it, but they like it for more than just the print or style. They buy their clothes because when they look good, they feel good. They might not always try to appeal men, but their expectations contribute to what women find acceptable as to what they should look like. Young women understand that men find breasts, legs, and butts appealing, and therefore they accentuate said parts.
Clothing should not hold a woman back and all women should feel confident in what they wear. Feeling confident requires the approval of society and men’s opinions of women definitely play a role in this. Although not all young women are blatant about it, they do try to wear clothing that accentuates their body.
