Instead of keeping to an all natural appearance girls believe that pampering themselves is an essential part of their daily routine. As a result, women now believe that to be considered beautiful they must conform to social norms. Likewise Amanda Scherker compiled her opinion of society's perception of beauty in the article, "7 Ways the Beauty Industry Convinced Women that They Weren't Good Enough." She notes that beauty has transformed into a dollar value and believes advertisements are a major component in the decline of women's self-esteem.

Even though people often negate the thought that beauty is important, the truth is girls often spend a lot of time with their upkeep in appearances. The fact is that the seven things writer Amanda Scherker discussed are not the only ways the beauty industry influences women. Products like make-up and fashion also factor into the bigger equation of beauty. In addition, the expectations for girls evolve over time and become greatly inflated with each new beauty product. The definition of beauty has evolved from "inner beauty" to a form of status and a ranking of femininity among one another. If women cannot appear to have a flawless appearance, they begin to lose self-esteem and confidence in themselves.
