When deciding on a topic to chose, I chose something that would be meaningful to me. Therefore I chose to focus on the comparison between softball and baseball.
The thesis for my editorial was Although softball has been proven to be harder to play, it still cannot compare to its male counterpart: baseball. This is a link to the Sports Science episode which I talk about in my editorial. It scientifically proves that softball is harder. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_de3HJvO-N8
My research paper was very similar to my editorial, but it went into more depth. This is more evidence and research based, while the editorial incorporated my thoughts and opinion.
Product
For my product I decided to make a magazine which I called "Miss Athlete." It features Jenn Salling who is the "best shortstop in the world," says University of Washington softball Coach Heather Tarr. This picture shows the cover of my magazine. Sorry it's sideways. I didn't know how to rotate it.
Final Thoughts
For my final product I decided to focus on the gender issues between baseball and softball. My essential question was "Why are female softball players treated differently than male baseball players?" This is my main question, but under this question there are going to be multiple different aspects I am going to research. I am going to focus on differences in pay, image, and differences in amount of time each is played on TV and which one is watched more baseball or softball. After doing research, I found that women's sports are nowhere near men's sports. For example softball players have very few T.V. broadcasts, they get paid way less, and image matters to them more than it does to baseball. After research, female sports have come a long way since the beginning. In the past there were only male sports, and today there are various female sports. Although the sport of softball has come a long way from the beginning, there is still a long way it needs to go. If the sport keeps growing like it has, hopefully one day it can be equal to its male counterpart: baseball. Personally as a softball player I think the sport has grown immensely on the college level, but my main focus was the professional level and this still has a long way to go.
