When signing up for this course, I wasn't sure what to expect. After a few discussions I learned that almost everything we talk about has to do with the relationships between genders. Throughout this course I have learned a lot of life applicable lessons. One of the most interesting things I learned is that many of the vulgar or hurtful names which you can call an individual is way harsher for women than men. The names that men are called all have ties or links to a female object. For example you can call a man a douche, whose literal meaning has to do with females. Also as a female I learned to stand up for myself and rights. I can be a passive female and let men control me or I can stand up and prove to men that women are equal. From the writer's perspective I learned to think beyond than the literal meaning. For example I had to think beyond the literal meaning to examine the various gender base issues in the show. This taught me that there are gender issues in every aspect of life whether it be cartoons or talk shows. The biggest thing that I will take from this course is to stand up for myself as a female. As a female, things might not always be the easiest, but if you work hard enough you can accomplish anything. The speaker Talia Leman was very inspirational to me because she showed that a young female can make big changes in the world. Not everything has to be males; this was just a high school teen that started her own business called Randomkid. This is a link to Talia's website http://www.randomkid.org/. I will apply my learning in this course by giving it my 100% in everything I do. I'm not going to let the presence of males stop me from doing anything. Also for writing I will think deeper than the literal meaning.
My final project sums up everything I learned from this course and allows me apply my learning to research a topic. My final project was based on the gender issues between softball and baseball, mainly focusing on image, pay, and beauty. One main lesson I learned from this is to start it early. I could have slowly worked on it a little by little, but I waited until the last minute to finish it. I was overwhelmed with projects from other classes also, but it was my own fault. Even though I procrastinated, I was still able to finish it and make it look great.
