Hi! My name is Kimberlee and I decided to take Women in Literature to learn more about the role of women in society. As a young woman, I wanted to find my role in life and society. Growing up I was usually the only girl hanging out with the boys at the baseball field or at different places like the beach or in the mountains hiking. I was curious as to why certain activities were more for females while others were for males. Why couldn't I play baseball for my entire life? Why is shopping considered feminine? By taking this class I wanted to learn the answers to these various questions. As a writer, I have 17 years of experience and taking this class helped me think beyond the basic assumptions and made me think deeper as to why these assumptions are made.
Blogging:
Until this year, I never really knew how to blog or what blogging really was. Creating this blog was a great opportunity for me to express my feelings and publish it to the web for others to read. We had various blogs this semester, but blog 7: Feminism had the most meaning to me. In this blog we had to search for an article that had to do with feminism. I found an article that was about softball and the affects beauty has on the sport. This was very meaningful to me because softball plays a big role in my life, and learning this helped me understand different aspects of the sport other than physical aspects.
My Coming of Age essay, which I titled, “Transformations” helped me learn more about myself and my role in life. When writing this essay I had to think of the many different factors that made an individual a girl, teen, or adult. This essay made me realize that I was turning into a woman and I wasn’t a child anymore. It taught me that I was actually very mature and independent for my age and could do many things on my own. Even though I am becoming more and more independent each day, I still have my parents there to support me or help me when it’s needed.
My Media Paper, which I titled, “Harmful to Women” taught me that there are gender-based issues in everyday life. I focused on the T.V. station MTV, and learned that this show portrayed women in a negative way. Shows such as Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, and My Super Sweet Sixteen were just a few of the shows I watched on MTV which portrayed women negatively. They portray women as wearing short shorts, tight tops exposing cleavage, pregnant, and spoiled brats. Personally I see that this show affects the public because when walking through the mall, I see girls who are dressed very inappropriate and I know they get their sense of style from various TV shows like those on MTV.
My song imitation poem, which I titled “My Dad” talks about life back in the days. Everyone knows their parents how they are now, but how were they back in the day? This poem has various questions as to how my dad was back in high school when he met my mom. This poem taught me to take every piece of information you can because everyone dies sometime in life. Therefore you might miss the chance and will be left with all these unanswered questions. Also it teaches me that one-day you will be old, and don’t be afraid to share your stories of the past with your children or grandchildren or else they will be left with unanswered questions. In order to gather my thoughts about the graphic novel Persepolis, I decided to add two panels to the end of the story. I felt as if the story wasn’t complete and it needed a little more, so I completed to story how I wanted it to end. From this novel, I learned that not everyone has easy lives. Even though one part of the world has peace and happiness, there is always another place where there is war and madness. Also I learned that people in different parts of the world have extremely different religions and customs. By drawing the missing panel it taught me to keep thinking once the novel is completed. Keep thinking and finish the book yourself if you feel the story isn’t completed. Project Assignment: http://iolaniwomenlit.wikispaces.com/Persepolis+Formal+Assessment
This video was very interesting and shows what men really think about feminism. I thought some of comments made by these men were very harsh. The men had to answer the question what do you think a feminist is? A few of the men thought a feminist was a lesbian, while others said feminist are angry militant women. The men seemed a little mad about it and said why are these women arguing or fighting for their rights when they get equal pay and their amendment was passed for equality years ago. Another man said that women should go back to being housewives. Personally I think this article was very harsh toward women and these men’s responses would make many angry.
