PROPOSAL ASSIGNMENT

1. The topic I chose was chivalry. I chose this as my topic because chivalry has existed amongst men and women since the medieval 12th century. Although is still exists, I’m interested in how it has changed. In medieval literature, chivalry was classified into three areas: duties to countrymen and Christians, duties to God, and duties to women. For my topic, however, I wanted to focus on the duties to women, which has been the most familiar aspect of chivalry. This kind of chivalry would also be known as “courtly love.” In medieval times, chivalry meant that the knight is to serve a lady, and in general, a gentleness and graciousness to all women. In the fourteenth century, chivalry also became a type of ceremonial practice and rules of etiquette. Men would have to prove their chivalry through manners, demeanor, the way they dress, heroic being, dignity, honor, wisdom, and courtesy. For many years, chivalry has been an essential attitude or state of mind for men.
2. Does chivalry still exist?
3. To explore this question, I want to do a video on men and women and what chivalry means to them, if it does. I would observe the way men treat women and how they define chivalry. Chivalry comes in many forms. Society most commonly sees chivalry as a man’s conduct to women--the way a man treats a woman. But chivalry was also related to duty in military and their state of mind as men. In our current society, chivalry is viewed as men being courteous to women. Through my documentary, I plan to interview men and women and their thoughts on whether they think chivalry exists and why. Interviews: April/May
Interviewees: 3-5 men, 3-5 women
Filming: April/May
