My name is Kelcie and I took the Women in Literature class because I wanted to learn more about my role, as a female, in society. I wanted to learn why my mother always stresses on me that when I'm of age, I need to vote. No matter how crowded the voting locations are, my mother will wait in line just to get her vote in. I also wanted to learn about was feminism. I always thought that feminism was a trait for females, but little did I know that it involved a revolutionary movement by not only women but men as well. As an English course, Women in Literature gave me the opportunity to learn and express my thoughts on gender roles/expectations and feminism through my writing. I hope that my portfolio shows not only my journey as a writer, but my journey of understanding the woman I am becoming. Writing has never been a strength of mine. But over many years of writing, editing, and writing some more, I have finally discovered my capabilities as a writer. My pink, Barbie diary was the first writing experience of my life. Every night I lay in bed and wrote about what I did for the day, my agenda for the next day, and anything worth remembering. As I grew up, I advanced in my levels of writing. From the diary I went to simply writing journals for friends to share, exchanging lengthy notes, writing three paragraphed papers, then five, and finally, the ever-so-dreadful DBQ's for history. The "first draft" has always been my best friend; giving the heads-up on whether to add more or cut down, to stick on one topic or branch out on another, or to keep on topic. My journey as a writer will always be one to remember; and fortunately, my journey has just begun.
Below is the link to my blog. I first began actual blogging in the Women in Literature class. As a first time blogger, it was a fun first experience. The only other blogging I've done was for my physics class. The difference between my physics blog and this blog was that I could express my opinions on the blog topic given. Many of the topics that the class had to blog about were interesting topics on gender and feminism. These topics were interesting to me because they are topics that would one would not normally write about for a class. It was also exciting to have class discussions the following day on our blogs and hear what others said on their blogs. The most meaningful blog was the very first blog we did for Women in Literature. The assignment was to write five assumptions that men have for women and five assumptions that women have for men. The assumptions varied for each student while some were also similar. This blog brought an engaging class discussion since both men and women agreed and disagreed with some of the assumptions made. Although class blogging has opened my eyes to different perspectives, the most important thing it as taught me was that stereotypes are powerful in controlling society but it is we, the people, who begin these stereotypes.
This video moved me a lot because it talked about how badly and unequally women are treated in different countries. In these countries women suffer so much; torture, terrorism, starvation, humiliation, and murder, when they are the ones who provide the food, clean, and take care of the family. In Northern Thailand, they have a mail order bride agency. The man who runs the agency explains why he thinks Western men are interested in Thai women. He said that it is because they know that Thai women respect their husbands. One woman had said that even if there is abuse in a marriage, the wife would just put up with it because they are married. The part that disturbed me the most was when the video said that some countries have bride burnings where unwanted brides are burned to death. If any brides survive this, they sometimes burn themselves anyway to escape the torture and to avoid being outcasted by the community. I hope that as a free country, we can spread this video and spread awareness about female abuse.
The Final Project
For my final project, the topic that I chose to do research on was chivalry. The essential question that would find the answer for was: does chivalry still exist? At first I thought that this topic would be difficult because the answer to this question would not be based on scientific research, but on the thought's of society. Fortunately, I was able to do enough research to come to an answer. Below is the steps which I have taken to answer my essential question, starting with my proposal. My proposal was very brief since I was not sure of how I would conduct my research to answer my essential question. The next step was my editorial. My editorial gave me a boost or jump start for my project. It helped me get an idea on what I wanted to do for my product that would educate others about chivalry. The research paper basically tied together everything: my research, interviews, and thoughts. For my final product, I put together some interesting clips on what others thought about chivalry. I hope that everyone enjoys the video and learns something new about chivalry, society, and themselves! :]
