Initially, we were required to read a poem entitled "Picture Bride" by Cathy Song. Song writes about the hardships her Korean grandmother must have went through. She writes using questions not statements. After reading and evaluating the poem, we were required to write one of our own poems about a family member or ancestor. I chose to focus my poem on my mom. Growing up, my mom as been secretive about her past. I was able to ask questions about her childhood through this poem. I also decide to focus this on my mom because she is a twin. Since I am not a twin, I don't know what it's like to eat, sleep, and breathe with a twin. What was it like living with someone who looks exactly like you?

Twin

Born four minutes
before the next,
fighting to be first.
First to learn how to ride a bike.
First in line at the candy store.
First to have a boyfriend.
Was she popular in school?
Once trying to be a cheerleader,
rocking the green and yellow,
flamboyant pom-poms in hand,
but only to find
that her sister made the squad.
Did this spark jealousy?
Causing her to tattle
on a sister
who snuck out
when the lights were out,
tip-toeing in the darkness,
with a father waiting...
holding his favorite leather belt.
Was she the snitch?
A sibling who didn't cover for a sister
and couldn't care less.
Was there competition
to see who was the
strongest,
sweetest,
smartest of them all?
Arch enemies with the girl next door
A girl who looks exactly like her.
