http://www.aagneyam.com/arrow/September_2008/celluloid/WomenPoster.jpg The beginning of Women in Literature opened my eyes to women in society. I learned that women had to fight for independence to overcome gender stereotypes. For example, ages ago women were seen as housewives who stayed home and cared for the family. They were the ones who had to cook and clean. Working and education was reserved for males. However, women have fought for freedom and today play a more active role in society. Although women are not equal to men, they are climbing the ladder. Women operate their own businesses, can receive an education, and and hold political positions. If it weren't for those brave souls who initially fought for women's rights, we wouldn't have these opportunities. After taking this course I will consider how gender stereotypes affect society. The Coming of Age Essay, Media Essay, and the Final Project has opened my eyes to gender in our society. The Coming of Age Essay allowed me to decide whether I am a woman or a girl. I decided that right now I am crossing the line of womanhood. There are times that I realize that I am still a girl and other times that I realize that I am becoming and independent woman. I really enjoyed writing the Media Essay because I didn't realize how many television shows revolve around gender stereotypes. I was assigned to VH1 and I took a closer look at the reality show called Basketball Wives. The title is ironic because the housewives aren't wives in reality. They are fiancees or girlfriends of professional basketball athletes. This show is full of drama and redefines the modern housewife. Hopefully, when viewers watch this reality show they realize that they don't want to become like these women. I enjoyed doing a final project because we could choose a topic that we were interested in. I chose to do my project on Abercrombie and Fitch because I am a frequent shopper. I learned that they use specific marketing tactics to create an image for themselves. They have a specific image to uphold so that they can be easily identifiable by consumers.
My personal opinion of women is that we are the pinnacle of creativity, durability and responsibility. We are hot mamacitas, we are the nurturers of life and we are the lion's neck. As dominant as men have been in society, there have always been women behind the scenes ensuring success. Also man has evolved, so have we. Fashion, entertainment, athletics, academics are just some of the areas we shape daily. In our purses you'll find full wallets, marked-up business planners and smart phones right next to our mascara and body spray.
