My name is Keileen and I took Women in Literature to learn more about women’s roles in society. I wanted to learn more about the process women had to endure to become the independent women they are today. I haven’t seriously thought about the hardships women faced when trying to achieve equality, independence, and freedom until I took this class. Throughout the semester I’ve learned that although women have gained independence, they will still have to fight for equality. Women still have to fight for equality in sports, work force, etc. I didn’t expect to also learn about masculinity in a course that is focused around women in society. But, through class discussions and informative current events, I’ve learned that males also play an important role in feminism. I hope you enjoy reading my portfolio which represents my discoveries in Women in Literature!
I blogged for the first time in Women in Literature. It was a really good experience because it is similar to writing an online journal. Instead of formally writing an essay, I was able to write casually. My favorite blog was the one on gender awareness. It took me a long time to think of the exact time I realized I was a girl. There wasn't a specific, life changing event that made me realize that I am a female. The experience I remembered was when I was scared to use the bathroom myself in pre-school. I didn't understand why my parents could help me at home, but my teacher couldn't. Overall, I enjoyed reading other blogs because it changed my perspective on gender. Below is a link to my blog.
I chose this video below because as viewers, we don't realize that many commercials are gender specific. Many commercials target males such as ones featuring cars or tools. Kitchen appliances and cleaning devices are targeted towards females. I also like how there is commentary from an interview in between one of the commercials. Below is the gender in media video.
