Abstract:
This article is in response to the "Slut Walk" that was held in Toronto earlier this month. The author is male and is very supportive of this event. He encourages women to dress how they want to and believes that people should not treat women a certain way because of the way they dress. He points out that society holds the actions of men to a lower standard and allows men to act how they want while simply blaming "biological imperative." The author believes that this should not be the case and that men should take responsibility for their own actions and change themselves rather than the way women dress.

What does it really mean to be a "slut"? Is it a mental thing or a physical thing?

Why do men claim that they have no control over themselves when this makes them seem weak?

Kenneth's Reaction: I enjoyed reading this article because it written by a man, yet it was about the topic regarding feminism. I think that it is rare to read an article about feminism written by a male. Towards the end of the article it was interesting to me to read his caption when he says that "as a father of a daughter"I support the Slut Walk. I had to think about how I would feel if and when I have a daughter. At that time, will I allow her to practice her independence and dress however she wants or will I be protective and make her wear a sweater every time she walks out of the house? Most likely, I will let her dress however she wants. While I would definitely like to make sure she dresses modestly, attempting to control her would most likely create a rebelliousness that results in the opposite of what I want. But I know I will be the worried dad that goes crazy the first time she has a boyfriend. On the other hand, the author of this article plainly say that he supports the Slut Walk while having a daughter seems rather complicated for me. When I have a daughter, I would definitely prefer that the "fashionable" way to dress will not involve scandalous outfits. I guess the definition of a "slut" is quite complicated. Women have begun to dress more and more how they want to rather than how society dictates. So the way they dress now would have been considered "slutty" a hundred years ago. Therefore, I think being a "slut" is more like a state of mind. I guess the important thing is why a girl dresses the way she does. I think that someone who is a "slut" wears what she wears for the sake of grabbing the attention of every guy that walks past her. She would also be someone who really puts herself out there without thinking about what kind of guys she's getting the attention of and how people view her. While girls shouldn't do things just to gain the acceptance of others, they definitely should make sure their actions still allow them to be taken seriously by others.
Keahi's Reaction I really enjoyed reading about the “Slut Walk” particularly because of the way that Kenneth presented this article not only because the feminist topic was strong, but also because it was written by a male. In the beginning of the article when he stays that “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” When he first stated this, the first question that came to mind was what does a women have to wear to be considered a slut and why should she have to be worried about being a victim because she wants to show some skin. I feel that women should be able to wear whatever makes them feel good and confident as well as comfortable even if in some elses eyes she is dressing like a slut. Another thing that caught my eye was when he stated that “men lack self-control”, I felt he was quick to jump to conclusion. Yes it is true that in some cases, men can't control themselves when a beautiful women walks by who they are very attracted to and make a sexual remark or do something uncalled for. But it is important to remember that not all men are like that. In many cases just because one guy makes a remark or sexual jester towards you does not mean all men are going to act like that. It's only the immature ones who don’t know how to talk to girls and do stupid things to get attention. I agree with Kenneth that the word "Slut"is more like a slang or state of mind. I feel that every person has their own point of view of a "Slut" and what categorizes them as one. But to me a slut is someone who wears too little closing and wears cloths that will grab the attention of all guys to look at her and ends up hooking up with many of them. I feel then a women is categorized as a slut. But if a women feels comfortable wearing short skirts and showing some skin but not a lot thats fine as long as they are comfortable.
