My name is Timothy Michael Keahiahi Hogan. I joined the Women in Lit class because I wanted to learn the differences and perspectives of women’s points of view regarding certain topics. Being a young man that respects women and realizes what they have gone through to get to where they are today, I have a great amount of respect toward women. Being a so-called “Mama’s Boy”, I learned a lot about how to treat a lady and be respectful to women. There are a couple of things I wanted to learn from this course and the main point was that I wanted to figure the definition of what it means to be masculine and what it means to be feminine. The reason I feel this is important is because I feel there are more than one definition of these two words and their meanings. Lastly, I wanted to try and understand the different perspectives of women for different situations. What I find very interesting is that both men and women reacts similar situations in a very different manner. Picture Coming of Age The Coming of Age paper, taught me a lot about myself. As each person wanders through the different stages of life, one needs to set goals and accomplish them in order to move on to the next phase. I feel these stages can be related to a life cycle starting with when you’re a baby. Before you can crawl you first have to learn how to move your arms and legs. Once you learned how too more your arms and legs you start to crawl. Once crawling is accomplished, you then start walking and as you accomplish each level you then advance to the next step. In life, there are different stages you must go through before you can call your self a man or be considered an adult.
Media Paper Ahi In my media paper, I was given the task of watching TLC. When watching “Toddlers & Tiaras,” I learned a lot about families, their moral values and what means the most to them. It was truly shocking what some mother put their 8-12 year old daughters through just to win a pageant. To them it’s not just a pageant, but instead it’s an event that means everything to them. I will never truly understand why these mothers put their daughters through the make up and waxing at such a young age. But as they say, “with beauty comes pain” which means that to be beautiful you have to accept the pain and the hard work that comes with it.
Poem (Ahi) The poem was really special to me. It was a way I could ask my mom questions about how I got my name and it also provided me with a connection to my great-grandfather. This was by far, the most special piece of writing to me the entire year. Through this poem I felt I was able to connect with my great-grandfather even though he’s not here anymore. It was a poem that was very spiritual and special to me sad that I felt questions were answer not only through my mom but the spiritual presences of my great-grandfather every time I read my poem.
Persepolis final panel writing. The Persepolis final panel was a very fun and unique project. I really enjoyed creating our own vision of what the final scene would look like in the book. I felt that through this project, we were able to see everyone’s creative side allowing each person to uniquely pick where to add slides to the book of Persepolis. For me I chose to draw her starting her new life in Paris, because it represented her starting a new chapter in life and a new beginning were she knew no one and no one knew her.
WIL Project I have always struggled throughout my life with writing and it has never been something I looked forward to. When it came to writing about specific topics, I would get anxious and struggle to express myself. The exception seemed to be this Women in Literature class and I felt that I was able to express my inner self and my true feelings. One thing that I learned through WIL was that there is never a right or wrong answer and you need to be able to trust your instincts and to speak from the heart. Because of this, I have gained confidence in my ability to not be shy and not speak up. I am not afraid to express myself and talk about how I feel about any situation. Being one of three boys in the class, there was nothing really to hide and realized that if we expressed ourselves we would not be teased for showing our feminine side. Overall, I loved the class and how it allowed me to see everyone’s different point of view on certain situations. It taught me a lot about the media and the world that is hidden behind the scenes that I never knew of. It was an amazing learning process that I wish was a full year course. As my respect for women grows, I won’t be afraid to show my feminine side and spread the knowledge that Mrs. Faulk and the rest of my class has bestowed on me. After much thought throughout this year, I came up with my final project idea of creating a picture of the ideal man and women of the twenty first century. I wanted to figure out how and who create these categories for people to fit into and be that ideal person. Throughout this project, I was able to find out that Hollywood plastic surgeons came up with these guidelines and created these ideal men and women of the twenty first century from their patients. It was truly amazing what people saw as the ideal man and woman. I also saw the downside of this industry and found out the side effects that children and teens are subject to when they are introduced to the media and the impact it has on their lives. Blogs(Ahi)
