Here is the article. This article discusses the recent trend at most colleges, in that there are more girls than boys on campus. It went on to discuss the social problems associated with this imbalance, such as difficulty dating, and how the lack of available men changes women's perception. I was fascinated with why there was an imbalance of women and men, especially at certain schools. After reading this article, I looked up different gender ratios at colleges, and found that there was a significant imbalance between men and women at science and engineering based schools, with men being the majority. I was also interested in the suggestion of some sort of affirmative action for men. Additionally, it was upsetting to see how many men believed they could treat women, just because they were the majority. Although colleges should strive to have a balanced campus, in many of the cases it seems that the female candidates were more qualified, and thus deserved admission more.
Nice abstract here. Perhaps use "we" rather than "I" as there are two people involved? Where are your reactions? You should have one per student, per the instructions. Ms. Falk
Discussion questions:
1. How should colleges balance the gender imbalance?
2. Why is there an imbalance of men to women at science schools?
3. How does women's perception of men change when there are fewer men on a college campus?
4. Why is there a gender balance at Ivy League schools?
5. Why has the balance of gender changed over the past 30+ years?
