Intro: My name is Jelene and I took this course because I wanted to learn more about gender issues. I wanted to learn why women were suppressed for so long and how they came about changing that. From the time I was little, my mom knew that I liked to write. She said that I used to scribble pages and pages of non-existent words on pieces of scratch paper. As I grew older, I started writing long stories about princesses and dragons and castles, and even included my brother's and friends in some of the stories. To this day, I remain an avid reader and writer, and am always interested in learning more. Hope you enjoy my portfolio!
This year was the first year that I actually learned to blog, and it was a really neat experience for me. The blog assignments that we were given required me to think deeply about my life experiences and thoughts. I thoroughly enjoyed all of our blogs, but I think the most meaningful one for me was blog #5, entitled "feminism." Before taking this class, I didn't really think about what "feminism" was. This blog assignment got me thinking about the struggles women have gone through in history to be where we are today. Something I mentioned in my blog was how stories and evidence in the Bible point to the fact that males are the dominant sex and are supposed to rule over women and control them. Because of this idea, women have had to work hard to try and gain respect, equality, and the same rights as men. I am proud for all the women who had the courage and strength to fight against the "dominant species," and thankful to them for gaining the rights women have today.
I think the title of this video: "the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes," says it all. I watched the following video a few years ago in my English class, and I have been inspired ever since. This girl in the video speaks out to about the effects of global warming in her life, and says that the adults need to change their ways. If a thirteen-year-old girl can speak out in front of hundreds of adults, then I think anything is possible. Who know that a little girl could make such a huge difference? I think that this girl was a huge inspiration to young girls across the nation, and I hope that this video can capture that.
