ABSTRACT: Author Amy Donaldson tells us her opinion about the trending short spandex shorts that female volleyball players have recently been forced to wear. Her article talks of the negative elements that this trend has brought to the sport and proposes the idea to rebel against this recent trend hitting almost all volleyball teams across America. Donaldson poses questions about the spandex such as, are they really necessary? Do they actually help the female athletes with comfortability throughout the game? Or is it just for looks? Has it added a sexual undertone to the game? What does uniforms involving short spandex do for women who are not comfortable with their body? In summation, Donaldson talks about sports as a way for females to express themselves and earn positive recognition. She has a passion for seeing women succeed in sports because for so long sports has been a male dominant activity. Donaldson pushes for the empowerment of young women and that is why she is making a statement against the recent and controversial trend of short spandex in volleyball.

J.T. - For me I honestly was never phased by a person in spandex. Growing up my dad was a wrestling coach and so I saw many guys in singlets, which is basically male spandex. My sister was also a ballet dancer and so I always saw her and her friends in spandex. It wasn't till I came to iolani and I began to watch a lot of girls volleyball that I realized the real buzz about short spandex. I definitely see both sides of the argument. For someone who is conservative, seeing young girls in short spandex can be quite appalling. On the other hand, being an athlete I know how essential it is to be comfortable when you're playing and so I can understand why girls may want to wear the less bothersome spandex while playing volleyball. I definitely agree with the author of the article when she begins to talk about what implementing spandex as a uniform can do to girls who may no be totally comfortable with their bodies. I definitely support the argument wondering if short spandex is really neccesary because in my eyes it really isn't that necessary. With this new trend kicking in all across the country, it's scary to think what other sports it might take over. Next thing you know women playing sports like basketball and tennis, both sports that require women to move left and right, up and down, will implement the knew uniform of the short spandex and we will lose our sense of tradition in sports uniforms. When it all comes down to it, the real issue revolves around the female body. I'm not the type to beat around the bush, so I won't. The ugly truth is that many see the short spandex as too inapropriate to wear. Many see it as something that exposes too much skin and because it is so tight, it reveals the normally unseen curves of the female body, and that makes many people question it.

Courtney - Being a softball player, I never have understood why girls like to wear such short shorts because they just don't seem practical. I understand that comfortablity is always good, but aren't regular shorts comfortable too? Personally, I think I would feel extremely self conscience if I had to wear tiny, spandex shorts. You play a sport because you enjoy it, and I feel that being uncomfortable in your own skin while doing something you love could eventually have a very negative impact. To me it seems like a lot of unescessary attention. Same as playing the sport, people should only watch the sport because they enjoy it, but I feel the sometimes, boys only watch volleyball for the girl's physical appearence and not their athleticism. Therefore, I agree with the author of the article.
