Women have been included in comics for years, but not always in a positive way. The world of comics has, until this point, been written by men for men. That means that the female perspective has been sadly missing, or has been interpreted, sometimes pretty badly, by the writers of those times. Our most well known female superhero, Wonder Woman, was a member of the Justice Society of America upon her onset to the comic world in 1942, but despite her status as both superhero and Amazon princess, had to serve as their secretary.
Things are much better today, with more women getting into the comic and graphic novel world both as artists and writers. But we still have a way to go before women in comics are more than just sidekicks. Today we'll get to dig into several different comics with female protagonists. As you read, consider what we have learned about gender and gender roles so far in the course. Are these characters an accurate reflection of women today? Do they need to be?
