Current Event News Flash: Ms. Falk becomes rap star DJ Funky Feminist. Are you scared?
In addition to the other material we will read this semester, you will be responsible for one current event. The inclusion of current events will allow us to make necessary connections between the literature we read and the world we inhabit.
The schedule below will note the dates of your current event assignment. You will do your current events in pairs (and one group of three) Here's the procedure to follow:
1. Find an article that connects to the topic of gender in some way. It may be a newspaper or magazine article. Read it carefully, annotate it, and come up with the following: A one paragraph abstract of the article A one paragraph personal reaction to the article (each partner should do separate reactions)
A series of discussion questions for your classmates.
2. 2 days before your current event, post your article (or a link to it) on the wiki for your classmates.
3. Read your classmates' comments. Then, create a slide presentation in which you include some of the comments from your peers, pictures or other relevant information. Use this as a visual aid for your discussion.
3. On your assigned day, be ready to lead your classmates in a full period discussion of your article. You will be graded on the following criteria:
Depth of questions
Skill in discussion leading (assertiveness, follow up questions, rephrasing, class control)
Overall quality of thinking.
REMEMBER: YOU ARE ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR ONE SOLID COMMENT ON EACH CURRENT EVENT. Use the discussion tab at the top of your current event page.
