I first signed up for this course because I heard many stories from my friends about Women in Literature being a fun class. Ending senior year with a fun English class sounded good to me, so, I signed up for it. Honestly, I didn't know what I wanted to learn from the course because I wasn't sure what we would be covering. I wasn't sure if the course was going to be a course that empowers women, or if this course was looking at the history of feminism. Turns out, it did both!

Now that I've experienced this course, I like how this class has a nice balance of being fun and informative. I'm really glad I took this class because it's challenging but not tediously challenging (like some classes tend to be). It's interesting to see the different opinions of the boys and the girls in the class when we're discussing a certain topic because it makes me think from their perspective and not just my own. I will always remember this class because I now realize the importance of Feminism. I have learned how more women need to take control and gain more power. Females are just as capable as males, and should not settle for less.

Enjoy my portfolio!

Tumblr:

Welcome To My Blog

Using Tumblr for blogging was fun because it's a website that I'm comfortable using. On my blog you will find questions we had to answer for homework. Each blog entry is about my opinion on a certain question we were asked.
The blog entry that was the most meaningful was the one that asked us for five assumptions about males and females. It was really interesting to see how popular some of the assumptions were. All males seemed to be expected to be sports-crazed and muscular, while girls need to be "feminine" and dainty. The following class discussions on each topic were also insightful because people gave reasons as to why these assumptions exist.

Adulthood Essay
This is my "Childhood to Adulthood" essay. While writing this essay, I discovered more about myself. I always felt as if I acted younger than my age, and this essay proved that. In my essay, I talk about how I don't feel ready to go off to college. However, within time, I know that I'll grow up and live on my own. It's weird because after writing the essay, I felt a bit more ready to take on college and I clarified the kind of person I am. After realizing that it's okay to mature at my own pace, I felt less stressed/ worried.

Keeping Up with the Kardashians
The media paper was the most fun to collect notes for. Watching the television was definitely entertaining, but the amount of gendered moments were shocking. However, I don't think they were intentionally airing gendered moments. I think it was just the way the family acted naturally. What I learned from this essay is that people usually watch the t.v. mindlessly, but when taking notes, you learn a whole lot more. When I first tried watching this show, I thought it was pretty pointless. Oddly enough, I became somewhat addicted to it. I liked seeing how everyone in the Kardashian family had different personalities that contributed to the show.

Song Poem
While I was writing this poem, I was trying to figure out why Mr. turned into such a horrible person. I decided to write off of the idea that Mister was a miserable person because the one woman he had feelings for didn't return those feelings. Mister is very fond of Shug Avery and they had a nice history together. However, the way Shug wanted to sing and was always on the move, their relationship was bound not to work out. This is why after so much time away from Shug, Mister turned into a cold person because he forgot how to love anyone else.

Persepolis Panel
On my missing Persepolis panels, Marji realizes how important family is to her. I also tried to portray the way Marji's imagination runs wild. The panels are a continuation after a bomb went off close to her home.

Final Self-Assessment:

Overall, I am really glad I took this course before graduating from 'Iolani. I enjoyed all of the readings, current events, class discussions, and I look forward to watching the rest of the speeches. Taking this course has taught me about empowering women, gender inequality, typical gendered stereotypes, and much more. What I learned in class has influenced the way I will act in the future. I've learned more life-skills in this class than any other English elective I've taken before.

1) I will remember to try to refrain from using the words “uh” and “like” in speeches and daily context. I remember Mrs. Falk telling us that although it’s hard to get rid of these fillers, it makes women sound weaker.

2) I will not tolerate being called nasty names for being assertive. During class we had a discussion on how women are considered the b-word for speaking out, but men are just considered tough.

3) I will do my best to rise to the top in business so both males and females can see that not only men are successful. One group talked about women in business for a current events discussion. I remember women didn’t want to be considered too aggressive and were more timid than men. Because women weren’t willing to take chances, men were more likely to run, and be successful, in business.

As for my final project, I studied up on body image in the media. I wasn’t too surprised to read about the pressure women feel to look good. However, the amount of females who suffer from eating disorders because they believe they aren’t good enough shocked me. There are girls under 10 years old who think that they are overweight, and that’s just wrong. This website was a part of my research. It gave really interesting facts about the media and body image problems.

After completing all my research, I came to the conclusion that the ideal body does not exist. First, photos in the media are edited. Second, everyone is born with a different body so not everyone can have this look. And third, the standards are always changing. I will remember everything I have pulled out of this project. I know not to feel bad if I don’t look like a Barbie. Although I know not to conform to the media’s standards, I’d like to let people know of the flaws in the media. This way, females will not hate the way they look. Then maybe one day people won’t care if the media uses underweight models, and the media can start using healthy models.

I am proud of all the work I have completed on these segments of the final project. I spent a lot of time on the student portfolio, and even more time on prepping for the presentation. Although I would have liked to have shown the video during my presentation, I am satisfied with the results. I know I sounded nervous while doing my speech, but I'm glad that I remembered to include every aspect of my research. Occasionally, I get so nervous that I forget a small portion of my speech, but I am glad to say that didn't happen this time!
