Hi I am Ashlyn and to tell the truth I thought we were going to read just literature that women wrote and learn about women power. However, throughout the semester I was very intrigued in our deep discussions about many of the gender issues. I discovered how to see the world from different point of views, which focuses on gender. There are many assumptions and stereotypes about each gender involved in many aspects of our lives such as work, sports, and in the media.
Tumblr Blog I enjoyed my blogging experience on Tumblr because the questions we were asked to answer made me think of things my mind never crossed over before. It made me question how our society thinks and functions. For example, how do we define who is a woman, man, girl, or boy? The blog entry which was most meaningful was the first blog. We had to come up with five assumptions men and women had about each other. As we discussed in class I question how do we develop these assumptions and why do we? I think it is only human nature to observe, judge, and make assumptions to according to what we see through the media and personal experiences.
Major Writings
Still Attached This major writing made me realize how much support my parents give to me. Sometimes I think I know everything and I can do anything on my own, but in reality I am still attached to my parents. No matter how many times I dislike them, I still always return back to them for help and advice. I also learned that I have good ideas, however the way I phrase my words makes it seem awkward. I need to be more organized with my thoughts and revise my paper more than twice.
Do They Have Too Much Freedom? The media paper was very intriguing and it gave me a different view on the shows in the Disney Channel. It opened my eyes to the gender issues through the media and how they can unexpectedly influence others. I learned that there are many small, but significant actions and words Disney Channel portrays that may be harmful to young girls in the future. I realize that they promote girl power, however if we give too much power to one gender is not good.
Aunty Alicia From this poem I learned that I am curious about my aunty’s past and her experiences. This was a challenge because I’m not the best poet, but I had to make a poem out of questions I was wondering about my aunty. I learned when writing a poem word choice is very import because usually that piece of writing is precise and I wanted to make sure I was expressing my feelings clearly.
Persepolis final panel writing Persepolis was an interesting book and I enjoyed the values and realistic situations that I was unaware about. We were asked to insert a missing panel to anywhere and I chose the end because I was it was unsatisfying compared to the rest of the book.
Final Assessment Throughout this semester in Women in Literature I gained a lot of knowledge about the issues about genders in today's society. All of our discussions, writing and homework assignments, and readings I gained more than just reading and writing skills. There were many times I felt inspired by our discussion topics take action. I am glad I took this course because it opened me up to reality and how people treat each gender differently based on the many stereotypes and assumptions by society. Even though I didn't say much during class, I was always intrigued and attentive during many of our discussions. I would say that this English class is one of the most valuable lessons we can learn from Iolani and apply it to our futures.
As for my project, I think this long-term assignment was a good way to help us organize and manage our time wisely. I learned that it takes a lot of discipline to follow through with the plans and finish the job. When we go to work there is no other option except for finishing you job well and on time. My topic I chose is Does gender affect how much someone financially earns? As a result, the answer is yes. People have different expectations for each gender and unfortunately they are many stereotypes. I thought the topic I chose would be very useful to know in the future and how to handle many situations where I have to be careful on how I present myself because I am female. I hope one day in the work force people will see men and women both have the potential to have equal skill and intelligence to be able to fulfill the job.
