When I began this project, it was actually because I have a few friends who are being raised by lesbian mothers. I had no idea whether or not science would support me, and I was extremely glad that my position turned out to be supported by science. I am indignant when my friends are discriminated against because of who their parents are, especially because there is nothing wrong with homosexuality. Although I am a Christian, I am specifically Episcopalian, one of the most liberal sects of Christianity. I firmly believe in gay rights, and so it was very enlightening when I began to do research about how Christians view homosexuality, including lesbian mothers and their children, and their basis for their views. I conclude my project knowing that in fact, lesbian mothers are not harming their children whatsoever by loving who they love. My friend who has been raised by two lesbians said in fact that she did not need a male father figure. However, they are treated differently from “orthodox” parents in the United States because of conservative prejudices, and their children are affected because of the discrimination they receive; they are also affected because scientific studies show that they are actually more proficient in academics, and are less likely to have behavioral aggression and have high, healthy self confidence than children raised by heterosexual parents.
